Data Engineering Team Lead (Europe) - Remote

My client is a fast-growing, product-led SaaS company operating at scale in the hospitality technology space. They work with large volumes of data and modern cloud infrastructure to solve commercially meaningful problems for customers worldwide.

They are now building a new Market Data function and are looking for a hands-on Data Engineering Team Lead to help shape and lead this capability from the ground up.

The Role

This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management and technical ownership. You’ll lead a small team of data and backend engineers while remaining close to the code, helping to design scalable data acquisition and transformation systems.

You’ll work closely with Product and Engineering leadership to define the roadmap, establish best practices, and turn previously ad-hoc data initiatives into robust, production-grade systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, lead and mentor a team of data/backend engineers
  • Design and own scalable, reliable data pipelines and architectures
  • Establish engineering best practices (testing, documentation, observability)
  • Translate ambiguous problems into clear technical solutions
  • Drive long-term thinking around data quality, ownership, and scalability
  • Contribute to broader data and platform architecture decisions
  • Stay technically involved through reviews, pairing and occasional hands-on work

Requirements

  • Experience leading engineers in a team lead or similar capacity
  • Strong background as a Software or Data Engineer
  • Advanced Python experience (4+ years)
  • Proven experience with modern cloud data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift)
  • Strong ETL/ELT and data modelling experience
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster or similar)
  • Solid system design skills with a scalability-first mindset
  • Comfortable operating in evolving, fast-moving environments
  • Fluent English and based in the European time zone

Nice to Have

  • Prior people management experience
  • Experience building or modernising data platforms
  • Hands-on experience with dbt
  • Exposure to high-growth or scale-up environments
  • Familiarity with observability, cost-aware architecture, or backend frameworks

What’s on Offer

  • Fully remote, Europe-based role
  • High ownership and autonomy
  • Opportunity to build and shape a brand-new team and capability
  • Modern data stack and real-world scale
  • Strong engineering culture with an emphasis on quality and impact
